What better way to start your day than with freshly harvested, local vegetables from Japan’s ancient capital city?
Miyako Yasai Kamo (都野菜 賀茂) in Kyoto boasts an all you-can-eat buffet throughout the day of seasonal, locally grown vegetables that are organic and pesticide-free. Our Kansai-based Japanese reporter was enticed by these words, so she recently decided to pay a visit to one of the restaurant’s three locations within the city to sample the freshly picked veggies for herself. While each location is open for three meals throughout the day, she chose the most economical route by going at breakfast time, which costs only 500 yen (US$4.90) each for adults. It turned out that she wasn’t the only one with the same idea, as she was greeted by a small line of people upon arrival:
▼ Miyako Yasai Kamo’s head branch in Shijokarasuma, Kyoto City
Once inside, she bought a meal ticket from the machine for the “Field Bar,” which consists of baskets of nothing but freshly chopped, sliced, and diced field vegetables, plain and simple. Unless you’ve already tried the delectable morsels from this buffet, we bet you’ve never even imagined the possibility that vegetables could be packed with as much flavor as these!
▼ Breakfast is only 500 yen to boot.
Our reporter was particularly impressed with the manganjitogarashi, a type of pepper cultivated in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture. It had never occurred to her to eat the pepper raw before, and the taste was 100% more delicious than she expected.
▼ Manganjitogarashi up close
Let’s take a look at some of the other dishes she found:
▼ Japanese-style omelet packed full of kujonegi (a type of scallion)
▼ Mizunasu, a type of eggplant
▼ Homemade seasonal vegetable dressing
▼ Even natto skeptics may have a change of heart once they try it mixed with fresh scallions at Miyako Yasai Kamo.
So what was her overall impression? Miyako Yasai Kamo will spur even the staunchest veggie haters into actually craving some leafy greens. It might not be a bad place to stop by if you have picky children in tow…
The breakfast buffet is limited in quantity, so if you’re hoping to start your day the veggie way we recommend going early or just biting the bullet and going for the slightly more expensive lunch or dinner instead. In any case, your stomach and taste buds will definitely thank you for indulging in such a fresh, organic meal.
