One of Japan’s most successful musicians ever takes on a new identity as “Katold Trump.”
On November 5, U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Japan as part of his diplomatic trip through Asia. One of the President’s first stop was Yokota Air Base, an American military installation on the western outskirts of Tokyo, so some people might have been surprised when they thought they caught a glimpse of the world leader all the way across town at the Tokyo Sky Tree instead.
But despite the 45th President of the United States’ famously high opinion of his own capabilities, he’s not actually capable of being in two places at the same time. That is, in fact, not Donald Trump in the above photo, but rather Katold Trump, alter ego of Japanese musician, actor, and celebrity Shingo Katori.
Up until the group’s disbanding on December 31 of last year, Katori was a member of boy band SMAP, one of Japan’s most popular musical acts ever. SMAP eventually spread out into an entertainment brand loved as much for its members’ appearances in movies, TV drama, variety programs, and cooking shows as for their singing and dancing.

Even after taking his costume off, Shingo showed off his Trump pantomime skills, recreating the politician’s often-photographed expressions of forceful anger.
While we’re not sure if we can call this the best Trump cosplay to come out of Japan, it’s still a pretty impressive bit of costuming by Katori, who long had the reputation as “the funny one” in SMAP. Who knows, maybe he’ll slip on the outfit on again before the U.S. President leaves Japan and try to bluff his way into Trump’s dinner with the “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” singer.
