There is no such thing as “too much parfait” for the SoraNews24 team.
Less than a minute’s walk from Tsuruhashi Station in Osaka you can find a restaurant named Kanariya that specializes in parfaits. They offer all the normal varieties you’d expect, but what drew us to Kanariya is something called the “Special Fruits Parfait.”
This monstrous creation reaches a height of 60 centimeters (23.6 inches) and is packed full of whipped cream, ice cream, cornflakes, bananas, and strawberry sauce. While working adults have to pay a whopping 4,000 yen (US$35), students under 22 years of age only have to pay 3,000. If you want to mix it up a bit, there’s also a Special Fruits Choco Parfait (4,000 yen for adults, 3,500 yen for students).
▼ The menu says it serves four, but we have big appetites, so we went with just three reporters. We live on the edge.
You’re probably either thinking, “That sounds crazy!” or “That sounds amazing!” Well, those are two things SoraNews24 strives to bring to you, so of course we weren’t going to pass up this challenge.
Kanariya has gotten so popular that even though we went shortly before opening, there were already three groups of customers waiting.
▼ This is what it looks like on a normal day.
Finally, we sat down and ordered our Special Fruits Parfait. It was a little intimidating, to say the least.
▼ I mean, it’s like the Isengard of parfaits.
To make it easier to eat, we separated the whipped cream from the rest of the parfait and split it.
▼ But it’s still terrifying even without the whipped cream.
Eating the Special Fruits Parfait is bound to make you feel at least a little cold, so we suggest you take extra measure to prevent getting too chilly (like bringing an extra sweater).
▼ We slowly made our way through layers of ice cream, strawberries, bananas, and cornflakes.
▼ Here’s a little of everything in the parfait at the same time.
And–as you’ve probably already guessed by the title–we managed to finish it! We completely demolished it, right down to the last corn flake.
▼ Can you believe it only took us 15 minutes?
So, are you ready to take on the challenge? If so, head down to Kanariya in Osaka. We have two pro tips for you before you go. One: get there earlier than later, since the parfaits stop being served when they run out of ice cream for the day. Two: unless you’re a group of students under the age of 22, you can’t make a reservation. Three: check their information and website closely before you go, because they have irregular holidays.
