One thing is for sure: You’d better like green if you want to eat here.
It’s only been a few weeks since the initial announcement that a limited-time Häagen-Dazs Matcha Salon would open in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills entertainment and shopping complex from April 24-May 5. The restaurant serves as the 35th-year celebration since the company introduced its matcha-flavored ice cream to Japan and will include a six-course matcha meal also meticulously planned to stimulate all of the senses.
▼ Interior conceptualization of the Häagen-Dazs Matcha Salon
The menu is being prepared under the supervision of restaurateur Daisuke Kaneko, who is the chef owner of two French cuisine-inspired restaurants in Tokyo. The six matcha-themed courses have been revealed as the following:
- Green tea and lime non-alcoholic cocktail
- Green tea-flavored crispy foie gras sandwich
- Three levels of richness matcha tiramisu
- Matcha gelatin cloaked in darkness
- Japanese green tea with matcha
- Supreme bliss green tea Häagen-Dazs
The official website mentions that these menu items may include eggs, milk, wheat, kiwi, gelatin, and sunflower seeds, so people with these allergens should take care.
Photos of three of the menu items have also been released. Pictured below are the “Green tea and lime non-alcoholic cocktail,” a carbonated welcome drink perfect for the early summer, as well as the “Three levels of richness matcha tiramisu,” which is delicately displayed in light-to-dark matcha gradation order on three spoons.
Last is the “Supreme bliss green tea Häagen-Dazs.” While the small dollop of ice cream may not seem like much, by this point in the meal diners are already likely to be quite satisfied with their overall matcha intake. The restaurant notes that this course will be served at the optimum temperature for eating Häagen-Dazs ice cream (-5°C/23°F), when the green tea will be its most aromatic and the texture pleasant to the tongue’s touch.
The six-course Matcha Salon menu costs 2,900 yen (US$26) per person. Seating is by prior website reservation only and the full course takes one hour to complete. Eight full courses are offered per day, beginning with the 11 a.m.-12 p.m. timeslot and ending with the 9:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. timeslot. Check-in at the reception desk begins 30 minutes prior to seating, which is also when you are expected to pay the bill (note that it is cash only).
Happy matcha munching!
