Based on Capcom’s hugely popular Street Fighter fighting games, upcoming TV series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist began life back in 2010 as a mere seed of an idea. Three years later, fans of the video games went nuts when the project surfaced on Kickstarter asking for funding, only for it to suddenly disappear again when it was snapped up by a private production company.
Since then there has been so little news about Assassin’s Fist that we were starting to wonder if it would ever see the light of day, but recently released photos and one website’s extremely positive first impressions have our hands tingling with hadouken power more than ever.
Here’s Joey Ansah, British-born co-creator and martial arts expert whose credentials include roles in The Borne Ultimatum and Batman Begins, talking about the production in summer last year.
Now, a series of photos has appeared online, setting video game forum NeoGAF buzzing as fans of the games start to anticipate a series that could really capture the true spirit of Street Fighter. Not only that but Hadoken.net, a site dedicated to all things 2-D fighting game-related, is apparently calling the upcoming TV series the best of its kind to date:
“Street Fighter Assassin’s Fist is not only the best Live action Street Fighter movie but it is also at the top of any Street Fighter adaptation ever made. A very strong script, great acting performance, awesome directing and cinematography and beautiful music. I have absolutely no doubt in mind how successful this series is going to be.”
We have yet to see even a snippet of the finished series with our own eyes, but the still production photos for the TV series so far look seriously impressive.
Well, except for Ken’s hair anyway…
After the god-awful 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and some fairly shaky animated homages to Capcom’s legendary fighting games, we’re hoping with entire of our video game-loving being that this turns out to be as awesome as it looks. Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist is due to be unleashed in early 2014. Don’t disappoint us, guys!
