Halloween is still more than a month away, but Tokyo’s witch population has gone up by one with the DVD and Blu-ray release of the live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service. To celebrate, the Tokyo Prince Hotel is delivering a double dose of tie-ins with the main character of Eiko Kadono’s novel series and Hayao Miyazaki’s anime, in the form of a bakery selling Kiki-themed treats and a hotel suite decorated with props used by the actors in the film.
To commemorate the film’s home release, the Tokyo Prince has converted one of its Princess Suites into the Kiki hotel room, which looks to be quite a bit more luxurious than the little witch’s digs in her story, which she spends living in a spare room owned by the baker Osono-san.
Even in its normal guise (pictured above), the 59.4-square meter (639.4-square foot) suite is an inviting place to spend a night in downtown Tokyo. The hotel is sweetening the deal, though, as the special Kiki room is packed with props used by lead actress Fuuka Koshiba and her fellow cast members, such as Kiki’s broom and costume, and also plane-obsessed pal Tombo’s bicycle.
As an extra surprise, the hotel says there are images of Kiki and her cat companion Jiji hidden all about the room. Guests can also look forward to a bundle of movie-related merchandise, termed “Kiki’s deliveries,” which is included as part of the plan.
Rates for double-occupancy Kiki suite are 28,000 yen (US$262) per night on weekdays, and 30,000 yen on weekends and nights preceding holidays.
Even if you’re not staying at the hotel itself, there’s still a way to get in on the fun. Inside the first-floor Pikake tea salon you’ll find a temporary branch of Osono-san’s Gu Chokki Pa Bakery. A variety of baked Kiki goods are on offer, including a limited quantity of 10 Bread Sets Delivered by Kiki per day for 1,000 yen.
Unfortunately, both the Kiki suite and Gu Chokki Pa Bakery are only sticking around until October 15. Ordinarily, we’d prefer to save our witch-based fun until Halloween, but for Kiki, we think we can make an exception.
