Can’t choose between wearing a dress or a kimono at your wedding? Thanks to this Tokyo-based garment maker, you don’t entirely have to.
Planning a wedding involves a ton of decisions, regardless of what country you’re holding it in. Brides in Japan, though, have one extra choice to make: whether to wear a kimono or a dress on their special day.
On the one hand, Western-style weddings are very much in vogue in Japan, as they have been for decades, and if everything goes according to plan, your wedding day will be your one and only chance to wear a wedding dress. Still, there’s an undeniable allure to the classic look of a formal kimono, which is a garment modern Japanese women find themselves with far fewer occasions to wear than previous generations did.
For those who want it both ways, though, there’s dressmaker Morie Bridal, which takes fabric from old kimono and gives them new life as gorgeous wedding gowns.
Each dress is made-to-order. While many clients bring in their own kimono that they wish to have remade, Morie Bridal can also search for fabric for brides-to-be who don’t happen to have an unwanted kimono gathering dust in their closet.
Fabric with a subdued pattern results in a dress elegantly understated enough that it won’t look out of place even if the rest of the wedding party is dressed in strictly Western attire, yet still makes a sophisticated, original fashion statement.
Of course, kimono come in a wide spectrum of hues. If you don’t have your heart set on wearing white, or perhaps if you’re following the Japanese tradition of changing into a different gown for your reception, Morie Bridal can also use more colorful fabric for a bolder look.
And if you’re not getting married, Morie Bridal’s non-nuptial label, Morie Tokyo, can craft blouses, coats, and less elaborate dresses out of kimono fabric as well.
If you’re interested in Morie Bridal or Morie Tokyo make one of their one-of-a-kind garments just for you, the consultation process can be started online here through the brand’s website.
