Sleep in a traditional Japanese house while surrounded by rice paddies, beaches, tree-houses, zip lines and a lighthouse on your very own private island.
When it comes to urban areas and big cities in Japan, there are thousands of hotels, ryokans and Airbnb options to choose from. If you’re looking for somewhere a little more off the beaten track, choices are more limited, but that doesn’t mean they have to be any less memorable, as you get to explore and experience the true heart of the country and its unique landscape. One of the best holiday plans we’ve seen lately comes from Airbnb owner Tetsuhiro, who rents out an entire island filled with nature and specially designed activity areas, offering accommodation for up to 100 people on a stunningly beautiful unpopulated island just off the coast of Nagasaki.
▼ It takes just five minutes to travel to the island from the mainland by boat.
The island, called “Tajima”, might be unpopulated but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do. The map below shows areas for kayaking, swimming, fishing, fruit-picking, camping, ziplining, and dozens more activities to keep groups occupied during their stay.
▼ The beaches on the island are all available for private use, any time of the day or night.
▼ And there are plenty of picture-perfect spots for camping or fishing expeditions.
▼ Those who don’t mind heights can get their thrills by flying through the trees on a zipline.
▼ Or looking out over to the mainland from the lighthouse.
▼ And there are plenty of amazing tree houses to explore throughout the island.
As the sun sets, visitors can cool off with a dip in the ocean, while relaxing on the beautiful hand-made floating jetty “sea house”.
With so many things to do during the day, it’s nice to have a home base to retreat to, and the accommodation on the island is absolutely beautiful. The traditional Japanese farmhouse is located in a picturesque setting and sleeps up to thirty people in 26 beds, with seven bedrooms and four bathrooms.
It’s a beautiful way to experience traditional Japan, with visitors able to enjoy bathing in large kettle-shaped iron bathtubs known as goemonburo (“Goemon bath”).
There’s also a traditional hearth in the main entrance area, which is a great place to relax and enjoy tea during the winter months.
During the evening, guests can enjoy star-gazing and the sounds of nature. With room for up to 100 people to stay on the island, camping here is also a great option, making this an ideal destination for a weekend of corporate team-building activities, and with staff on-hand to help guide people around the island and introduce you to the many activities available, anyone can enjoy an island stay. For singles or couples, a night here might wipe out your savings, with a price tag of 424,144 yen (US$4,003) per night, but for bigger groups, the cost per person makes this an affordable and unique trip away.
