And yes, you can have them on Tuesday.
No matter what your calling is in life, one thing is universal: In order to succeed, you’ve got to stay hungry. That maxim is especially easy for us to remember in a literal sense, since we’re in the business of stuffing ourselves with as much food as possible.
Our relentless pursuit of excellence in that field recently took us to Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood. While we’d recently been gorging ourselves on Japanese favorites like crab, kushiage skewers, and oden, on this day we wanted to expand our eating horizons, and so we settled on all-you-can-eat tacos for lunch.
Mexican restaurants in general aren’t all that common in Tokyo, but just a few blocks from Shibuya’s famed Scramble Crossing intersection you’ll find TexMex Factory. Operated by the same company that manages popular izakaya (Japanese pub) chain Watami, TexMex offers all-you-can-eat tacos, an offer we were only too happy to take the restaurant up on.
Just 1,000 yen (US$8.90) gets you all the soft tacos you want, as well as unlimited refills on soft drinks. The first step of the taco procurement process is to grab some tortillas from the counter.
Next, carry them over to the tables lined up with bowls of fillings and condiments. Options include chicken, beef, pork, lettuce, cilantro, sliced onions, salsa sauce, guacamole, and cheese.
▼ The all-you-can-eat deal also comes with unlimited soup, meaning you could, in theory, make your own tortilla soup with the ingredients available.
Japan’s taco culture is still in its infancy, and so as we looked around we spotted some diners with sparsely filled tacos, likely a result of their being unsure how much the folded tortillas could comfortably hold.
But being able to eat a limitless amount of food gives you limitless chances to practice and perfect your taco-making technique, and eventually everyone seemed to get the hang of it.
TexMex Factory’s endless tacos can be enjoyed from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., so come early if you want to take advantage of the full 210 minutes. Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn’t offer the all-you-can-eat deal on weekends, but it is available from Monday through Friday, meaning that you can celebrate Taco Tuesday five times a week.
