Never shy of running a cool promotional offer or two, Japanese convenience store Lawson has announced that it will be transforming one of its Tokyo outlets into a video game castle to mark the launch of the Nintendo Wii U version of hugely popular game Dragon Quest X. Even better, visitors to the store will be able to bag themselves a whole host of themed goodies and even unlock in-game items during the promotional period.
Although the Wii version of the online role-playing game saw release some seven months ago in Japan, the Wii U version — which will feature enhanced visuals and be playable on the console’s touchscreen control pad — is due to go on sale on Saturday, 30 March in Japan, priced 6980 yen (US$75), much to the delight of the series’ millions of fans.
In honour of the game’s release, the front of Lawson’s Shinjuku East Side store will be decorated to look like a bricks-and-mortar cartoon castle, along with iconic Dragon Quest blue slimes. Visitors to the store will also be able to check out full-size replicas of swords featured in the game and pick up limited edition slime carrier bags with any of their purchases.
Those already playing Dragon Question X or planning to pick up the new Wii U version will also be excited to hear that the first 10,000 customers purchasing any of the specially marked goods in the store will receive an original Dragon Quest coaster, which comes complete with a “present charm” (presumably a unique code that can be entered online) that can be used to unlock in-game items. Nintendo 3DS owners can also take advantage of the store’s fondness for fantasy by stopping by any time from 3 p.m. on March 1 with their console’s “street pass” mode activated to access something special.
The Lawson store will retain its unique look between Saturday, March 30 and Tuesday, May 7. Be sure to swing by and take a look if you’re in the Tokyo area.
