We’ve seen our fair share of interesting and often downright weird snacks in Japan, from Mountain Dew poofs that actually fizz in your mouth to chocolatey dried squid. Now we’ve got one more for you: Chocolate covered shrimp chips. If you wrinkled your nose at the thought of crunchy shrimp snacks, you’ll double over at the sight of these sweet and savory snacks that smell of the sea.
Chocolate covered shrimp chips, specifically the Kappa Ebisen variety, aren’t actually new to Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets. They’ve made guest appearances around the country, surprising shoppers by popping up on store shelves for a few weeks, only to disappear once more into the depths of whatever kitchen was brave enough to come up with such an outlandish edible.
▼ Made even better with Ghana-brand milk chocolate!
In celebration of 40 years of Kappa Ebisen, a Japanese plum (ume)-flavored shrimp chip has also been released and will go on sale on March 5.
▼ With jumbo shrimpy crisps!
Any adventurous eaters in Japan, let us know what you think of these two chips that combine the fishy flavor of shrimp with the sweet taste of chocolate and plum.
