In the four months since we got our first taste of baked Kit Kats, we’ve been enjoying as many of them as we can. Still, sometimes our sweet teeth are at odds with our lazier tendencies, and we can’t be bothered to cook the things ourselves. Plus. Lately we’ve started feeling a little guilty for neglecting all the other desserts we love.
So we were happy to find out that Nestle Japan is currently recruiting restaurants to combine baked Kit Kats with cakes, parfaits, and crepes, and the results are already hitting plates and bowls across Japan.
As of July 25, the candy maker claims that 150 restaurants nationwide are serving baked Kit Kat creations. Eventually, we’re hoping to try all of them, but these seven Tokyo eateries are the first on our list.
1. Bio Ojiyan Café
11:30 a.m.-7 p.m.
Website (Facebook)
Located on a backstreet of trendy Harajuku, the Bio Ojiyam Café, which also hosts music and fashion events, will hook you up with a slice of cake of your choice and a pair of baked Kit Kats for 600 yen (US$5.95).
2. Grandma’s Georges Omotesando
Tokyo-to, Shibuya-ku, Jingumae 6-7-16, Jingumae MS Building 2nd floor
12 p.m.-12 a.m.
Website (Tabelog)
Also in Harajuku, we can’t quite wrap our heads around the logic behind the name of Grandma’s Georges Omotesando. The appeal of the sweet potato pie a la mode with baked Kit Kats is pretty easy to grasp, though.
3. Café Flamingo
Tokyo-to, Shibuya-ku, Udagawacho 10-2. Shibuya Udagawacho Tennant 1st floor
11 a.m.-5 a.m. (11 a.m.-12 a.m. Sundays and holidays)
Website
Keeping the ice cream but swapping some fruit for the pie, Café Flamingo is the place to go if you’ve got a late-night craving for a chocolate banana parfait with baked Kit Kats.
4. Sakuragaoka Café
Tokyo-to, Shibuya-ku, Udagawacho 36-3-6, 6th floor
3 p.m.-2 a.m. (Fridays 3 p.m.-4 a.m., Saturdays and holidays 12 p.m.-4 a.m., Sundays 12 p.m.-2 a.m.)
Website
The Sakuragaoka Café’s Sakura sundae takes a more sophisticated route by ditching the cherry and sprinkles and instead adding two rusk slices.
5. Café Bohemia
Tokyo-to, Shibuya-ku, Udagawacho 36-22, Noa Shibuya Building Part II 1st floor
PartⅡ1F
12 p.m.-5 a.m.
Website
Meanwhile, you’ll have to actually make the trip to the Café Bohemia to find out the exact contents of its baked Kit Kat parfait, since it’s made with whatever fruit happens to be in season at the time.
6. Cafe & Creperie Lala Humhum
Tokyo-to, Shibuya-ku, Daikanyamacho 12-16 Symphony Daikanyama 2nd floor
11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. (closed Tuesdays)
Website
No fashionable Japanese neighborhood like Daikanyama is complete without a crepe joint, and Lala Humhum can make you one with chocolate, bananas, and of course baked Kit Kats.
7. Mokuola Dexee Diner Uilani
Tokyo-to, Chiyoda-ku, Yurakucho 2-7-1, Yurakucho Marui 8th floor
11 a.m.-9 p.m. (Sundays and holidays 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.)
Website
Finally, we’ll forgive this tongue-twisting name of this café located in the swankyMarui shopping center inYurakucho, as long as we get to eat one of their baked Kit Kat crème brûlées.
A complete listing of all participating restaurants, including those in Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Nagoya, can be found on Nestle’s website here. For the time being though, these seven should give residents and travelers in Tokyo enough desserts to last them a week (or a little over two days, if you can’t resist the urge to eat baked Kit Kats at every meal).
