Eat Whoppers inside the nest of the living dead as zombie staff crawl around you this Halloween.
Every year in Japan, the area around Shibuya’s famous scramble crossing becomes the place to cosplay, meet new love interests, and run amok during Halloween. This year, though, people will be heading in to Shibuya for an entirely different reason, as it’s the one place in Japan that will be selling the new limited-edition Ghost Whopper from Burger King.
While the exclusive burger is reason enough to visit, the new store itself is set to be just as appealing. The Centre-Gai branch in Shibuya has been totally revamped for the event, and after temporarily closing earlier this month to prepare for the Halloween makeover, it’s now been re-opened as the “Shibuya Ghost Store”, with a facade that looks like something straight out of a zombie film or video game.
▼ The zombie theme continues inside, with dimly lit decor and new fittings designed to look broken and weather-beaten.
▼ Special details keep customers on edge with the sense that zombies could break out from the walls or fall from the ceiling at any minute.
Those who really do want a side of zombies with their meal should pay the store a visit on 25, 26 and 31 October, as those are the days when zombies will be crawling around the store as customers eat their meals.
▼ Because no Halloween is complete without a zombie selfie.
The star of the menu at the new Ghost Store is the Ghost Whopper, which retails on its own for 400 yen (US$3.68) or as part of a set meal for 500 yen, and is unavailable at any other store in Japan. Based on the fast food chain’s signature Whopper, this burger contains a flame-grilled 100-percent beef patty, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup and creamy mayonnaise, all sandwiched in between two ghostly white buns.
▼ The white buns taste different to the regular buns as they’re baked to a moist texture at a lower temperature than usual.
While the Ghost Whopper is also available at select stores in the U.S., the Tokyo store is the only one in the world where you can eat it inside a specially made store teeming with zombies.

Burger King are also encouraging customers to join in the zombie fun with a new promotional campaign, where people who post a photo of themselves on social media eating a Ghost Whopper while looking like a zombie can receive a coupon for a free Whopper Jr. All you have to do is post the image on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #burgerking and #halloween and show it to staff at the Shibuya Ghost Store on 25 or 26 October (between 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.), or 31 October (between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the next day).

According to Burger King, the Ghost Whopper is currently the only food item on the menu at the Shibuya Ghost Store, but other items may be added depending on demand.
As the Ghost Store is located within the area of Shibuya where public consumption of alcohol is banned on Halloween and on the weekend prior to it, Burger King says it will be complying with the alcohol ban, and possibly limiting food sales in the case of overcrowding.
