Mickey as a samurai? Minnie as a geisha? It works surprisingly well.
We’ve seen some great fanmade Disney/Japanese crossovers before, but never before have we come across ones that were actually created by an artist working within Disney itself.
Instagram user johnram27 is a Disney story artist and theme park designer who, in his spare time, apparently enjoys creatively editing Disney and Disney-inspired characters into traditional Japanese pictures from the 19th and early 20th century.
Here’s a sampling of some of his work.
▼ Ah yes, all the classical nature motifs: blooming flowers,
the full moon… and Tinkerbell.

▼ “Tokyo? Sorry, never heard of it. Now if you’re looking for Edo,
on the other hand….”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BDRF9wHDCor/
▼ “A ha a ha! We sure did slice them up good, didn’t we?”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BDy55dgDCv5/
▼ Donald acting just like himself and not even
making an attempt to fit in by changing his clothes.

▼ Taking a mini stroll through some sakura.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BBBMdPJDCiB/
▼ Two good friends heading off to school in their awesome uniforms.
https://www.instagram.com/p/9mNas3jCn4/
▼ Who knew Mickey could make such a killer irezumi?
https://www.instagram.com/p/BCTtCWDjCi4/
▼ At least the elephant is trying to be a samurai and not a ninja.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BC-1roujCmG/
▼ “Guys, I don’t know what happened here, but whatever it is, I didn’t do it.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BCLm_4ADCuC/
▼ Click to see animated smoke bring this scene to life.

▼ Or click here to see animated mist make
this Edo-period Disney villain ready for his theme song.

▼ There are also a few pictures from modern-day Japan that show off the best…
https://www.instagram.com/p/BBarF55jCmp/
▼ …and the worst of riding the train in the city.

If you want to see more cool Japan/Disney crossovers, then check out johnram27 on Instagram. Who knows, maybe someday one of the pictures may show up in a Disney film or park ride, and you can take pride in knowing that you were on that bandwagon way before it was cool.
