If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Japan’s capital, there are a huge array of options designed to suit all types of budgets and needs. While most travellers will know about the convenience of capsule hotels, lately there’s been a rising trend in transforming multi-purpose spaces like Internet cafes into cosy places to stay for the night, which are turning out to be some of the best deals you’ll find around town.

Now Japan’s popular bookstore and video rental store chain Tsutaya is venturing out into all-night accommodation territory for the first time with a stunning new space they’re calling the “Tsutaya Book Apartment“.

Located in Shinjuku, the Book Apartment aims to provide a quiet haven for customers looking to escape the madness of one of the busiest districts in Tokyo. Unlike most other bookstores, this one will be open 24 hours a day, with a number of unique features on offer so that people who miss the last train out of town will be able to stay over as well.

There’s a lot on offer throughout the multi-storey complex to keep people entertained at any time of the day or night, with a chic sake bar on the basement level…

And there’s even a Starbucks on the third floor of the building. Customers are welcome to enjoy their coffee inside the Starbucks, or they can take their beverages up to the fourth floor “co-working” area. This space is perfect for individuals or groups looking for a place to work, with a printer on hand, along with iMacs, iPads and a number of power sockets set up for customers around the room.

The fifth and sixth floors are designed to be relaxing spaces, much like a “shared living room“, where customers can take off their shoes and kick back while browsing through the hundreds of books on display.

The restrooms are located on the fifth floor, and there are also shower rooms here as well, so overnight guests can freshen up before setting out for the day.

The sixth floor is the designated women’s floor, where ladies can relax in private booths at any time of the day or night. There are also restrooms on this floor as well, along with a 12-tatami mat shared area perfect for overnight naps.

Customers can use the beautiful new spaces at very reasonable rates. The 30-seater co-working area is priced at 500 yen (US$4.40) an hour per person, with a one-off 100-yen fee for first-time users. The relaxing fifth floor area, which has 32 private booths and 42 seats in the common area, also costs 500 yen per hour, with an additional one-off 100-yen rate for those using the women’s-only area. Private booths incur a one-off 500 yen surcharge, and use of the shower room also costs 500 yen. They’ll even rent out some lounge-wear for you to use during your stay for 1,000 yen.

Those wanting to stay overnight can get discounted rates priced at 2,800 yen for six hours or 5,500 yen for 12 hours, with both including the shower option for free.

Officially opened from 6 December and located just a few minutes’ walk from Shinjuku Station’s east exit, Tsutaya Book Apartment is a great place to chill out with some books, and if you fall asleep while reading, then that’s perfectly fine here too.
