Buying a fukubukuro (lucky bag) is one of the most anticipated thrills during New Year’s in Japan. Although what’s in the bag is a mystery until you’ve paid for it, the goods in the bag are usually worth more than the price you pay for the fukubukuro, so most of the time it is indeed a “lucky” buy.
Depending on your luck, you might not get something you desperately want or need in the bag, but even that wouldn’t dampen your day as much as what this Japanese Twitter user found in her slightly “unlucky” My Melody fukubukuro.
My Melody is a popular character from Sanrio, the very company that created the world-famous Hello Kitty. Usually sporting a red or pink hood over her ears, My Melody is a sweet little girl rabbit that has been capturing the hearts of children and grownups alike since 1975.

How could such a lovely character end up as an unlucky item in a lucky bag, then? The unfortunate Twitter user, Tsubaki, received a My Melody fukubukuro as a birthday present recently, but when she opened the bag, she found that the My Melody plush pillow in the bag looked somewhat… mutated.

But what Tsubaki found in her lucky bag was…

▼ THIS.
▼ Tsubaki’s tweet of desperation: “Somebody bought me a My Melody lucky bag but… is this even acceptable? The face is upside-down”
▼ Some netizens were quick to react, joking that perhaps what everyone assumed were ears were actually legs.
▼ And the jokes went on… Upside-down My Melody in Mario World…
▼ …walking the runway at a bridal show…
▼ …traveling the world as Obama’s secretary, maybe?
▼ Of course, making a cute step for mankind!
Japanese makers are known for their impeccable quality control, but it seems even they have a slip up once in a while. Well, to err is human! At least Tsubaki managed to get a refund. We hope she has gotten something better to make up for the unpleasant birthday surprise!
