Sagamihara City is offering Sailor Moon marriage certificates sporting an image of JAXA’s Hayabusa spacecraft.
Where the United States has NASA, Japan has JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. And one of JAXA’s most famous campuses is located in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the internationally renowned Hayabusa spacecraft is on display. In 2010, Hayabusa became the world’s first spacecraft to return to Earth with samples from an asteroid after visiting one called Itokawa.
The asteroid probe will now be exploring new territory, crossing paths with one of anime’s biggest star-filled enterprises: the Sailor Moon franchise. Sagamihara City Hall is behind the intergalactic collaboration and is releasing original marriage registration certificates featuring Princess Serenity with her beloved Prince Endymion and some special secret details that local residents will love.

The envelope that Princess Serenity holds in the picture above is a cute nod to another spectacular local site. Known as the “Midori no Rabu Reta” or “Green Love Letter”, this eye-catching work of art is located in the hills of Fujino in Sagamihara’s Midori Ward. Created by a local artist, the impressive installation is one of several outdoor pieces that highlight Fujino’s nature-conscious community and its drive, as a so-called “transition town”, towards sustainable living. The love letter is so big it seems to have caught the attention of the anime heroine.
Available until 25 March, the certificates can be used by betrothed couples both inside and outside of the city and prefecture. It’s the perfect way to celebrate a miracle romance!
