For such an ordinarily listless bunch, hit anime Attack on Titan’s titular monsters sure have been busy lately, collaborating with hamburger chain Lotteria, appearing in their first smartphone game, and even helping one fan get a job.
But now comes literally the biggest Attack on Titan promotion yet, as a life-size recreation of the 60-meter Colossal Titan is set to menace Japan in projection-mapped form at a shopping center in Kawasaki.
The Lazona shopping center opened in 2006, and has helped revitalize, plus add a bit of fashionable flair to, downtown Kawasaki. The complex, which is attached to Kawasaki Station, also houses restaurants and a movie theatre. Lazona even has a spacious, open-air central plaza where visitors can rest their feet. Or, if they happen to be at Lazona on one of three special days in April, they can see with their own eyes just how big Attack on Titan’s largest giant is.
Being located in the center of one of Japan’s largest cities, Lazona is surrounded by skyscrapers, providing ample backgrounds for projection mapping a huge image. On April 10, 12, and 13, that image will be of the fearsome Colossal Titan, the 60-meter (197-foot) skinless monster that appears in the very first episode of Attack on Titan.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair for the event organizer’s to simply sic a Titan on the good people of Kawasaki. They’re also sending two heroes to protect the populace, as images of series protagonist Eren Jaeger, plus his childhood friend and Scout Corps compatriot Mikasa Ackerman, will also appear, using their 3-D maneuver gear to zip to the heights necessary to battle the creature.
Two shows are scheduled for April 10, the first at 8 p.m., and the second at 8:30. While humanity is enjoying some leisure time on the weekend, the Titan works overtime, with shows on Saturday April 12 and Sunday April 13 at 7, 7:30, 8, and 8:30 p.m.
Lazona’s central plaza is part of the shopping center’s public space, so admission to the general viewing area is free of charge, although there’s also a reserved, premium section for which tickets can be applied for on the event website. Organizers also say that in the case of excessive crowds, admission to the general viewing area may also be shut down. Given the massive, and still growing, popularity of Attack on Titan, we recommend getting there early.
