When making her professional debut, manga creator Hiromi Arakawa decided to work under the masculine-sounding pen name Hiromu Arakawa. The choice was probably made under the logic that a male author would be more easily accepted by the predicted male fanbase of the action-adventure stories Arakawa was crafting.
In the end, though, all of that worrying was probably unnecessary. Male readers have no issue with Arakawa’s gender because she can produce awesome adventure stories, and her series have enjoyed broad crossover appeal with female manga readers as well. As a matter of fact, so many of Arakawa’s fans are women that there are now two pairs of pumps inspired by her most successful series, Fullmetal Alchemist.
Anime fashion label Super Groupies has just unveiled its two newest products, these Edward Elric and Roy Mustang synthetic leather pumps, based on the anime and manga hit’s two most popular heroic alchemists.
The Ed-based footwear contains a number of nods to the series lead, starting with a design evocative of his iconic costume of a short crimson coat over a black shirt and pants. The bolt-like motif of the clasp also references the Fullmetal Alchemist’s mechanical replacements for his missing arm and leg.
Meanwhile, the ankle strap brings to mind the braid Ed wears his fashionably long hair in.
If you prefer the steely Flame Alchemist, the Colonel Roy Mustang pumps bear the insignia of the character’s rank.
More military-style snappiness is waiting near the toes, where you’ll find an angular flap similar to the one on the front of Roy’s Amestris army uniform.
And finally, the relatively low heels on both models should not only help leave your feet comfortable, but also prevent you from towering over the two fairly short anime heroes.
Super Groupies is taking order for its Fullmetal Alchemist pumps through its website (Ed here, Roy here) between now and October 18. Both are identically priced at 12,800 yen (US$108) with delivery scheduled for early February.
