As much as Japan loves Halloween, the country’s favorite foreign-introduced holiday is still Christmas. It’s not hard to see why, since in Japan the December celebration is both the nation’s biggest date night and also its most accepted excuse to gorge yourself on fried chicken. Plus, this year good boys and girls can expect a visit from someone very special at Christmas: Pikachu Snowman plushies, plus a whole stocking’s worth of new winter-themed Pokémon goodies!
Japan is of the mindset that a proper snowman should always be made with two large snowballs, never three. Such rigidity may seem a little out-of-place for a whimsical outdoor art project, but it does make an easy transition from electric Pokémon mascot to Snow Pikachu.
Known as the “Pika Daruma” in Japanese (yukidaruma being the word for “snowman”), the wintery Pocket Monster is available in both male and female Pikachu versions, with the former sporting a scarf and the latter a shawl. The stuffed animals are priced at 1,210 yen (US$10) each, while smaller versions on straps go for 900 yen.
If you’re looking for something in Pikachu’s traditional yellow, there’re also the Christmas Illumination Pikachu plushies, which dress the male and female variants up like Mr. and Mrs. Claus (1,500 yen). A Santa stand-in needs a reindeer substitute, too, and that role falls upon the shoulders (and ears) of the Christmas Illumination Eevee stuffed animal (1,500 yen).
More into metal than soft fabrics? The Snow Pikachus are also available as charms (prince undetermined). Other options include a Pokémon Christmas 2015 pin (600 yen) and Christmas Illumination Metal Charm Set (960 yen), which gets you six Pokémon in holiday attire.
Feel like decking the halls Pokémon-style? There’s a heart-meltingly cute Pikachu wreath (2,000 yen), and also a platter (1,530 yen) that would be perfect for laying out milk and cookies for St. Nick on.
▼ Or jelly donuts, if you’re a fan of the U.S. TV version.
Finally, since it’s better to give than to receive, if you’re wrapping presents for friends why not seal everything up with some decorative Pokémon tape (600 yen)?
All of these items, in addition to yet-to-be-revealed Christmas Pokémon blankets, foot warmers, and iPhone cases, will be available for preorder from the Amazon Japan Pokémon Store starting October 31, with an on-sale date of November 7, at which time you’ll be able to find them at Pokémon Center shops across Japan as well.
