Eyeballs for everybody! Oh, except the teddy bear cake that they clawed one off of.
For the most part, Halloween imagery in Japan is pretty similar to Halloween imagery in the States (although with a lot more purple over here). Decorations usually feature jack-o’-lanterns, witches’ hats, black cats, and other things of that ilk.
But this year at Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills entertainment complex, Halloween is all about eyeballs.
That right there is the 650-yen (US$6.30) Berry Halloween Eye Cake, which you can get at Roppongi Hills’ e.a. gran cafe during the center’s Halloween celebration, which lasts from October 7 to 31. It’s not the only ocular treat available in the complex, though. Arguably even more disturbing is the Real Eye Crepe, which is available at Cafe Crepe for 980 yen.
▼ The eyeball is actually a grape confectionary, but in this case we think diners will forgive the false advertising in the Real Eye Crepe’s name
And because eyeballs are apparently just as good to have in your drinks as they are in your food, Cafe Crepe can also whip you up a Real Monster Eyeball Drink, priced at 680 yen, which plops a pair of blueberry juice-infused candies into a cup of grape soda.
Depending on how they roll around in the cup, there’s a chance that the Real Monster Eyeball Drink’s candies will end up looking like silly googly eyes. Still if you’d rather order something you know is going to be cute, Eggcellent’s 2,900-yen Purple Potato and White Chocolate Spider Pancake is unintimidatingly festive in appearance.
Of course, if you’re after the ultimate in adorableness, it’s hard to resist the allure of friendly bear-themed desserts.
However, you should be advised that Dal-Matto’s 432-yen Zombie Bear has had his left eye clawed out is a messy manner.
You know, that might actually be even more disturbing than Tokyo’s lumpy turd chocolates.
