On 19 January, potato chip maker, Koikeya, announced they will sell a new flavor in their Premium Series line of chips, this time using the flavor of one of the most expensive delicacies in the world, truffles.
Sold at convenience stores across Japan from January 30 to February 6, you too can get a taste of the good life for only around 150 yen (US$2) a bag.
Dubbed Salty Truffle Flavor, Koikeya has utilized its Premium Series cooking method to bring out these chips’ maximum flavor potential. This process involves thoroughly and evenly deep-frying the potatoes at a lower than usual temperature to ensure a higher level of delectability. The flavor is then further heightened with the addition of Italy-imported rock salt and truffle flavoring. The result is a salty taste embedded with lingering flavor of savory truffle.
Salty Truffle is the latest in a long line of Premium flavors. Since the line began last March with Premium versions of their standard Seaweed Salt and Consume flavored chips, Koikeya has released groundbreaking flavors exclusive to certain regions in Japan like Kyushu Soy Sauce, and Kobe Beef Steak Soy Sauce. Other flavors are exclusive to convenience stores, like Salty Kelp Broth and Royal Butter, which uses cultured butter from France.
So if you’re in the mood for a cultured evening then head down to your local convenience store a pick up a bag. When you return home we recommend putting Verdi’s Libiamo Ne’ Lieti Calici on the stereo and enjoying these potato chips with a bottle of Côte Rôtie, if you have one on hand.
