It’s been over 80 years since the words “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” were made famous by the 1920s song of the same name. Well, here we are in the 21st century, and it looks like we’re still screaming for ice cream, because who doesn’t love the sweet, cold stuff, right?
Even in the middle of winter, frozen treats like yukimi daifuku and other ice cream products in tantalizing seasonal flavors (seriously, why do they have to come up with ice cream flavors like pumpkin, apple pie and french toast?) can be incredibly tempting. Among our favorites, of course, is Häagen-Dazs ice cream, and today, one of our reporters from the Japanese RocketNews24 site shares with us his very own quick and easy recipe for creating a yummy dessert using store-bought Häagen-Dazs ice creams cups. And what makes it interesting is that although it involves ice cream, it isn’t a frozen dessert!
The best part about this recipe is that it can be used with any of the numerous Häagen-Dazs flavors, so you can choose your favorite, depending on your mood or the season. Here’s how, according to our reporter, you can make delicious Häagen-Dazs ice cream even tastier by turning it into a baked (or steamed) pudding!
It’s actually ultra-simple. All you need is Häagen-Dazs ice cream and eggs:
And all you have to do is follow these easy steps:
1) Take one Häagen-Dazs ice cream cup (120ml or approx 4oz.) and melt it in the microwave
2) Beat the egg…
3)… and mix it with the melted ice cream
3) Run the mixture through a fine strainer and pour into small cups
3) Cover the cups with foil and bake or steam (depending on convenience or preference)
4) Cool/refrigerate to preferred temperature and you have your own original ice-cream flavored pudding!
Now, isn’t that super easy? And the reason why this works so nicely, our reporter says, is because one Häagen-Dazs ice cream cup and one egg just conveniently happen to amount to roughly all the ingredients necessary to make a serving of baked/steamed pudding. Yes, a cup of Häagen-Dazs ice cream contains all the good stuff, besides the egg, that you need to make delicious pudding, like cream, milk and (a whole lot of) sugar. So, all you have to do is add an egg, then bake or steam, and you get pudding in the ice cream flavor of your choice!
When cooking the pudding, there apparently isn’t any specific cooking method that you need to stick to, so you can bake with an oven, heat with a microwave or use a steamer — whatever suits your preference or is convenient. Of course, you can try experimenting with various methods or take hints from other cooking sites.
Our reporter also commented that you can make a similar pudding with ice cream other than Häagen-Dazs, but using ice cream with less milk fat content results in pudding that is maybe a little too light and not as rich in flavor as it could be. For that reason, he recommends using ice cream with at least around 15% milk fat content, which is approximately what Häagen-Dazs ice cream contains.
The beauty of this recipe is that you can choose any ice cream flavor that you like, but our reporter’s top three flavor picks were: 1) Chocolate Brownie, 2) Pumpkin and 3) Strawberry. Mmm… they all sound good, don’t they? I haven’t actually tried making one of these puddings, but I do know that the Pumpkin flavor ice cream is absurdly delicious, so I can completely understand if it rates highly on our reporter’s list. Vanilla apparently also gives you a very nice, standard pudding, but our reporter says if you’re going to use vanilla, you should really try it with some caramel sauce, and I, for one, am definitely not going to argue with that suggestion!
So, we hope you might be persuaded to make an original ice cream pudding with your favorite flavor, and if you do, we’ll certainly be delighted to hear how it went!
