Japanese toilets continue to lead the way with a new range of beautifully decorative models.
Toilet culture in Japan has earned a name for itself around the world. Whether it’s the touted health benefits of the nation’s squat-style toilets or the high-tech complexities of the washlet bidet systems, a visit to the restroom in Japan can be a fascinating experience. Now, a local company is aiming to combine the wonders of Japanese toilet technology with the beauty of traditional art, with three new models featuring scenes from “Fugaku 36 Kei”, or the “Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji”, the famous ukiyo-e woodblock print series by acclaimed Edo-period artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849).
▼ Toilet flushing takes on a new significance with the Fuji III design, which features The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the first and best-known print in the series.
▼ The “Hokusai Fugaku 36 Kei” series also includes the Fuji II model, which takes its design from the print Fishing boats at Tago-no-ura Bay in Ejiri.
▼ And the Fuji I model shines with the summer heat of “Aka Fuji” or “Red Fuji”.
If you’d like to add a view of Mt Fuji to your bathroom, prices start at $2,500 plus an unspecified design fee. Taikou Juken, the company behind the unique models, will be finalising a contract to supply the high-end toilets to wealthy citizens and luxury hotels in Dubai within the year. With a full range that starts at US$1,980 for bright colours and camouflage designs, through to $2,200 for animal prints and luxury colours, it’s a stylish investment for any home.
