After seeing all the beautiful art on display, fill yourself up with some Laputa bread.
This week sees the opening of the comprehensive retrospective art exhibit covering all 22 Studio Ghibli anime films at Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills. As is often the case for events held at the venue, the museum’s attached cafe, The Sun, is preparing a special lineup of edible tie-ins, this time taking inspiration from some of director Hayao Miyazaki’s best-loved films.
When watching 1986’s Castle in the Sky Laputa, one of the happiest moments for fans comes when male lead Pazu gives mysterious escapee Sheeta a slice of toast topped with a fried egg. This moment of mouth-watering kindness has earned the dish the nickname “Laputa bread” in Japan, and of course it’s on the menu, served with a side of meatball soup for 1,080 yen (US$10.50).
If you’d prefer something darker and more substantial, there’s the 1,380-yen Makkuro Burger (“pitch-black burger”), which takes its name from the Makkurokurosuke soot spirits (which are also sometimes called Susuwatari) from My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.
▼ Like Burger King Japan’s famous black burgers, the Makkuro Burger’s focaccia buns get their color from bamboo charcoal.
Speaking of Totoro, The Sun’s special Ghibli dessert has to do some pretty serious stretching to make a connection with the loveable Ghibli mascot, tying the cocktail parasol in its Green Tea Umbrella Shaved Ice (750 yen) to the umbrella the forest spirit receives from countryside newcomer Satsuki in their film’s memorable bus stop scene.
▼ All the same, it does look pretty tasty.
The Sun will be offering the themed menu items from July 7 to September 11, concurrent with the Studio Ghibli art exhibition.
