When it’s time to go big or go home, you can go really big at some of our favorite restaurants in Japan!
Our writing staff at RocketNews24 are happy to put our stomachs to the test in order to bring you all of the best restaurant news from around Japan. For a country that boasts the most restaurants with Michelin stars, it’s also home to a ton of places that simply want to fill your stomach to capacity… and beyond!
Our Japanese staff have eaten a lot of food in 2016, but here are six of their favorite restaurants that boast about pure “volume” of food in no particular order.
Tori-en / 鳥園
The literal Mt. Fuji of roast beef bowls was a great memory from 2016. If we ever need a way to eat until we forget, Tori-en will be one of the first stops on our restaurant crawl.
Address: Tokyo-to, Shinjuku-ku, Nishi-Shinjuku 1-2-4
Open 12:00 p.m. to 11:40 p.m.
Closed New Year’s Day
Kitchen Mamii /
Open for only three hours during the day for lunch, this popular spot for office workers and students piles on the fried shrimp for a measly 850 yen (US$7.25). Maybe it’s because of their limited hours, but we can’t seem to get enough of Kitchen Mamii!
Address: Tokyo-to, Chiyoda-ku, Kanda Jinbouchou 2-28, Kase Building 1st Floor
Open 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Closed Sundays and holidays
Tonsai /
The “large” size is not a misnomer here as their regular portions are quite massive in and of themselves. While the restaurant is famous for their breaded chicken cutlet (chicken katsu), the dish with tartar sauce is what they recommend the most.
Address: Kanagawa-ken, Fujisawa-shi, Shounandai 1-20-3
Open 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Closed Wednesdays
Nikujiru Ramen kimi /
If you are the kind of person who loves meat toppings on their ramen, Nikujiru has a bowl with your name on it. While another ramen shop might give you five or six slices in their “chashumen”, you’re going to get a whole bowl of meat here for only 1,300 yen ($11). Be ready to let out a satisfied sigh when you reach the bottom of the bowl, we guarantee it!
Address: Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ku, Kita-Shinagawa 2-25-10
Open 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sundays and holidays)
Agemonya /
If fried chicken is your game, and the Colonel is perhaps turning you off, you should head over to Agemonya in Suginami. Their scrumptious and juicy pieces of fried chicken have us dreaming of karaage whenever we think about dinner.
Address: Tokyo-to, Suginami-ku, Koenji Minami 4-29-9, Dai 3 Anabuki Building
Open 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
the Nikudon no Mise / the肉丼の店
The old saying is “quality over quantity”, but for most restaurants on this list, quantity stands on equal ground with quality. The topping of raw egg on this roast beef mountain makes for a delightful dinner that might need a shovel to get through.
Address: Tokyo-to, Ota-ku, Nishikamata, 7-5-5 Dai 6 Kikuchi Building, Spacy Plaza Kamata 1st Floor
Open 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
With so many delicious restaurants wanting to welcome us back in 2017, perhaps we should spend our money on a gym membership as opposed to the lottery-ticket-like Lucky Bags that are being sold now. Or we can just do both and share our goodies from the bags with our friends at these six restaurants. We’d definitely have a heavy stomach and light wallet to begin the new year.
If you are looking for more “big food” restaurants, be sure to check out more from the Tokyo area.
