Famous Japanese confectioner Glico has been bringing us iconic Japanese sweets like Pretz and Pocky for decades. Now they have a real treat in store for us, thanks to an extra-special line-up to celebrate the upcoming 3-D movie, Stand By Me Doraemon.
The new specially marked packs include a hidden secret: 3-D moving images of Doraemon that come to life in your home. But these aren’t just any images. They’re created by you, with your very own colours and designs transformed into unbelievable, moving images, each with Doraemon acting out a fun scene before your very eyes! Check out all the different designs after the jump.
After hearing about the promise of a floating 3-D Doraemon, we made our way to the nearest candy store to see if we could find one of the special packs. The whole range was there waiting for us, and it includes Pocky, Pretz, Collon, Bisco, Caplico, as well as chewy Heart-shaped Caramels.
We went all out and bought packs of Pretz and Pocky, a box of Caplico Minis and a set of limited-edition flavoured Pocky we’d never seen before. The Doraemon designs on the Collon and Bisko boxes were the same as the ones on the Pocky and Pretz packs so we were sure we had all the designs.
First up, we take a look at the pack of classic Chocolate Pocky.
We’ve always liked opening chocolate packets, but now with the added Doraemon bonus, we’re feeling like excited children again!
The design is sitting at the bottom of the packet, revealing itself like hidden treasure.
Time to start colouring! We decide to use pencils, combined with highlighter pens to make the colours really stand out.
After downloading the special app onto our smartphone, we’re taken to the menu screen. We push start and hold the phone over our work.
The three-second countdown begins, adding to the anticipation…
Up he pops, sitting in his time machine and floating above our desks! This has got to be the greatest thing we’ve seen in a long time!
The image is even more realistic, thanks to the shadow that’s produced beneath him, which moves even as you change the angles.
He’s there but he’s not there! Augmented reality at its best.
Now it’s time to make the image move. By pressing the camera icon in the middle of the screen, we can take as many screenshots of the scene as we like.
Doraemon thrusts forward, only to be swept back by a flurry of Salvador Dali-esque clocks as he travels through time.
After the mini-movie, Doraemon still hovers gently. Taking a look at him from all angles, we can see the details of our design brought to life, our colouring-in clearly present on the back of his round little head!
Time to try out the strawberry Pocky pack.
This one features Doraemon’s Gulliver Tunnel.
This time, we try dressing the robotic cat in a suit of green.
Now to see if the smartphone app will reject our inaccurate colour scheme.
There he is, alive in green, surrounded by fluorescent trees and flowers!
Time to take some screenshots of the animation. Doraemon enters the tunnel normal size…
And pops out the other end. Can you see him? Thanks to the magic of the Gulliver Tunnel, he’s transformed into a tiny version of himself. Not to worry though – walking back through the tunnel from this end makes things right again.
Now we move on to the Caplico Minis, which come in three flavours, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. These are mini versions of their popular ice cream candy cones, which are sweet and crunchy.
Is there a collective name for a group of Doraemon? Perhaps it’s Doraemen. Or Doraemania?
Turning the box over, we get to see our next design.
Time to flatten out the box and start colouring. Doraemon’s famous Dokodemo Doa (“Anywhere Door”) is usually pink, but we decide to give it a personal touch to test out the results.
Now we’re ready to bring Doraemon to life with the smartphone app.
In a matter of seconds, the picture springs to life! Doraemon is standing by his door, surrounded by fluorescent-green grass.
Pressing the image once makes him move. The door opens, he walks through it, turns to face us and then jumps up and down waving before walking off with the door closing behind him.
Glico’s Pretz sticks come in savoury flavours. This one has a hint of tomato.
Doraemon appears with another one of his magical contraptions, the Pass Loop.
This time, we suit him up in red and black.
After using the app, a brick wall pops up with Doraemon.
The moving images show the Pass Loop working as it does, creating a handy escape passage that lets you pass through brick walls.
Now on to the salad flavoured Pretz.
The design shows Doraemon flying, with the aid of his trusty Take-copter.
Some squiggly patterns should really put the app to the test.
Sure enough, there’s Doraemon as we dressed him, in bright orange and blue, floating in a sea of clouds!
So many clouds…
Even the reverse view is impressive.
After all that hard work, it’s time to reward ourselves with a new Pocky flavour. These packs don’t have any 3-D designs hidden inside but their flavours – Cookies and Cream, Strawberry, and Dorayaki, a Japanese style pancake sweet that Doraemon loves eating – are a Pocky combination we don’t see every day. Only problem is, the boxes are too cute to tear open!
