You could argue that it’s silly for the heroines of Sailor Moon to wear heels, seeing as how, like clockwork, they’re required to head into battle against dangerous monsters once a week. But while the Sailor Senshi are the defenders of humanity, they’re also five fashionable young girls, so you can see how they (or series creator Naoko Takeuchi) would be reluctant to go with, say, combat boots instead.
If you’re a Sailor Moon fan living in the real world, though, fighting evil probably doesn’t figure into your footwear choices, leaving you free to step out in these heels inspired by the Sailor Senshi, or the sensible flats modeled after their feline mentor Luna.
As is so often the case when the worlds of anime and shoes collide, this collection comes courtesy of Super Groupies (previously known as 2PM Works). Ordinarily, the company operates strictly as an online entity, but later this month a Super Groupies pop-up store is coming to the P’ Parco department store in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro neighborhood.
At the pop-up store, Super Groupies will be debuting its new line of Sailor Moon pumps, which of course includes a pair based on the titular heroine herself.
▼ The crescent moon charm on the strap is a nice, subtle nod to Usagi’s lunar roots.
Similar to the prim and proper Ami herself, Sailor Mercury’s are the most understated in design.
Unlike Usagi and Ami, Rei actually wear does wear pumps as part of her Sailor Senshi uniform. Nevertheless, Super Groupies’ Sailor Mars shoes are slightly different from the anime’s, featuring ribbons on the back and a two-tone color scheme.
While Sailor Jupiter’s shoes are open and airy, the way their straps stretch past the ankle is evocative of Makoto’s short boots.
▼ They’re also the only Inner Senshi shoes without ribbons.
Sailor Venus’ pumps, which like all the Sailor Senshi shoes are priced at 17,800 yen (US150), are perhaps closest in design to their original version, although we can see why Super Groupies decided to add a touch of eye-pleasing orange/navy contrast.
And finally, if you’ve got a long day of walking ahead and don’t think your feet will hold up walking atop those heels, the Luna model looks to be the comfiest option, and is the cheapest one too at 16,000 yen.
The Super Groupies pop-up store will be open from April 29 to May 10, giving shoppers a rare opportunity to try on the company’s items, which are usually only sold through mail order, before they buy. And if you’re into anime but not necessarily Sailor Moon, there’ll be plenty of other things to tempt you, as Super Groupies is also bringing fashion merchandise drawing from Evangelion, Black Butler, Tales of Destiny, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Cadrcaptor Sakura, Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, Attack on Titan, and Haikyuu!!
