Clever Pokédex Easter egg finally pays off as sleepy Pocket Monster’s true power is revealed for first time in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
We recently found out that Sega has been putting a hidden message on its arcade bags since 2014. That’s not the only subtle secret that’s been going on in the video game industry, though, as Nintendo managed to keep tight-lipped about a cool Pokémon design point for two decades.
Players of the Pokémon games (as well as interior furnishing enthusiasts) are no doubt familiar with Snorlax, the sleepiest of all Pocket Monsters, who’s been part of the series since the very beginning. Initially encountered as a slumbering roadblock in 1996’s Pokemon Red and Green, the original Snorlax Pokédex image shows the creature lying flat on its back.
But while Snorlax enjoys a comfy snooze, it’s not like he’s always asleep. So as the series has gone on, he’s been gradually waking up in his Pokédex images!
▼ From top to bottom: Pokémon Gold and Silver (1999), Ruby and Sapphire (2002), Diamond and Pearl (2006), and Black an White (2010)
Snorlax’s graphical evolution is chronicled in a new preview video for Sun and Moon, which also has another startling revelation about the Pokémon.
▼ Snorlax shows up at the 1:00 mark
After 20 years of slowly rousing himself , Snorlax is finally ready to get serious in Sun and Moon, in which he gains a destructively explosive new attack!
Let this be a reminder that while Snorlax is often sleepy, he’ll get around to showing off his world-shattering offensive capabilities as soon as he’s fully awake, so don’t lump him together with other Pokémon who are just plain lazy.
