Cooking a special dinner? Try this crazy kitchen hack!
Omuraisu (from “omelet rice”) is a fluffy egg omelet wrapped around rice and catsup, is a popular comfort food here in Japan. That yellow blob you always see maid-waitresses drawing catsup hearts on? That’s omuraisu. For a slightly fancier version, you can put a rich brown demi-glace on top instead of catsup squiggles and you’ve got a homemade meal that will melt your beloved’s heart faster than a chocolate bar in the sun.
And speaking of chocolate, did you know you can make a demi-glace sauce from scratch with catsup and chocolate as the main ingredients?! I know, crazy, right? But our sweets loving Japanese-language reporter Sweetsholic found just such a recipe on chocolate maker Ghana’s website and decided to give it a try. Here’s her report.
Ingredients
This recipe has just four simple ingredients: 50 grams (1.8 ounces) of milk chocolate, 60 grams of catsup, 2 teaspoons of milk, and 4 teaspoons of soy sauce. Most of you probably have everything you need at home already!
Instructions
1. In a pan, heat water to 50℃ (122°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, this should be just a bit hotter than bathwater. Turn off the stove. Place a heat-resistant bowl over the pan. Chop the chocolate and add it to the bowl, stirring until melted.
2. Once the chocolate has melted, add the catsup, milk and soy sauce. Mix and you’re done! Easy peasy.
Taste Test
Whipping up a homemade demi-glace just like that! Boom. Take that, Martha Stewart!
But now comes the moment of truth. How does it taste? It’s… sweet. Really sweet. It tastes kind of like demi-glace, but perhaps more like okonomiyaki sauce?
Next we tried it on the omuraisu, and while our sauce is quite sweet on its own, it goes surprisingly well with the rice omelet! Adults might find it on the sweet side, but we bet kids would love it. It would probably work really well as a steak sauce too.
Conclusion
This is something you can whip up with ingredients on hand and it will be better than nothing. We used milk chocolate as the Ghana recipe called for, but you could try with dark chocolate and it would probably cut down some of that sweetness.
There you go, Rocketeers! Now go impress your date with your mad kitchen skills. Still too difficult? Try our original recipe for Oreo rice: just dump and cook.
