Babies, animals and popular Japanese idols get in on the hottest trend this summer.
When it comes to cooling down on a hot summer’s day, nothing beats the refreshing, juicy taste of a cold watermelon. Now, people around the world are discovering a new way to enjoy the fruit during the hottest months of the year, and this time it involves “wearing” a slice in the shape of a dress.
Images of people wearing watermelon dresses have been flooding Instagram, with photos being posted from people around the world. This weekend, a popular member of Japanese idol girl groups HKT48 and AKB48, Sakura Miyawaki, also joined in the fun, creating a stir online that brought attention to the summertime trend throughout Japan.
It’s not only adults who are stepping into watermelon dresses; babies look equally adorable in them too.
In fact, it seems that children know exactly how to have fun with the trend, pulling out all sorts of fun poses while “wearing” the fruit.
When humans have a slice of fruit in one hand and a camera in the other, cats and dogs are powerless to escape the powers of forced perspective.
Just because you’re a man, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a watermelon dress!
One of the best parts about the new fad is the fact that after “wearing” the dress, you get to eat the cutely shaped watermelon too.
With at least two months of hot and humid weather ahead of us, it’s definitely not too late to join all the fun of this summer’s watermelon dress craze. The more creative the pose, the better, and if you’d like to add your photos to the Japanese collection of images, be sure to include the hashtag #スイカドレス (#WatermelonDress).
