The unusual sweet is one of several new treats only available at a special Kit Kat Chocolatory store in Tokyo.
From gold-covered chocolate bars to rose-topped varieties, Nestlé has given its Japanese customers a huge variety of limited-edition Kit Kats over the years, but now it’s time for a truly special treat featuring an all-new ingredient they’ve never used before: chocolate cake.
The Kit Kat Chocolatory Gateau Mignon has been created to mark the re-opening of the flagship Chocolatory store and cafe in Tokyo’s upmarket Ginza district. The new chocolate is one of a number of treats that will be available for sale exclusively at this branch only.
Kit Kat Chocolatory stores are known for their high-end chocolate offerings, and the cafe at the Ginza branch will be upping its game with an exclusive menu, featuring some new treats that customers will love.
First up is the Below Freezing Chocolatory, which contains a selection of single-bar Moleson Kit Kats, cooled to sub-zero temperatures with dry ice, along with a matcha-topped ice-cream filled monaka wafer bar, served in a chilled glass to create a perfect summer treat.
Also on offer will be the Kit Kat Chocolatory Parfait, which combines a special chocolate fondant and pieces of fresh fruit with three types of ice cream and three fruit-flavoured Kit Kats for a creamy and refreshing dessert.
There will also be an exclusive Kit Kat Chocolatory Sublime Original Message service, which allows customers to create personalised messages on the surface of Sublime brand Kit Kats, which will be packaged in a beautiful box designed for gift-giving.
What’s really got everyone’s attention, though, is the Kit Kat Chocolatory Gateau Mignon, which is said to bring a whole new texture to the well-known chocolate, by adding a soft and chewy piece of gateau chocolate cake inside the top layer.
▼ The new release is being billed as a “cake-style Kit Kat“.
Japanese patissier Yasumasa Takagi, who oversees the Chocolatory stores and is known for creating many of the brand’s innovative new releases, spent over a year developing the new Kit Kat, using a lengthy process of trial and error to create a fondant chocolate with the perfect texture to balance the sweet and work in harmony with the other ingredients.
The Kit Kat Chocolatory Gateau Mignon will be sold in boxes of three for 1,458 yen (US$13) or six for 2,916 yen. As an added bonus, the first 85 customers to purchase one of these boxes at the Ginza store on each day from 25-31 July will receive a free piece of the chocolate cake used inside the new Kit Kats, which will not be made available for sale on its own.
The Ginza store and cafe will be open from 25 July so if you’re looking for a personalised gift or a well-earned treat for yourself, be sure to stop by and enjoy some of the most exclusive sweets Japan has to offer!
