The only limits are your imagination and anime trinket shelf space.
The Nendroid line of anime figures, from manufacturer Good Smile Company, has been one of the most popular lines of otaku-oriented merchandise since its inception in 2006. With a huge cast of stars from Japanese animated and video game series available, some Nendroid fans have built up large collections, but now might be a good time to make a little more space on your shelves, because Good Smile Company is now letting you custom-design Nendroid faces to your liking.
Called Nendroid Face Maker, the new service just began on July 27. To start, you’ll need to make an account (which costs nothing) on the service’s website, then sign in to start the Nendroid face editor.
You’re given a blank canvas/face and several different ways to fill it up. Obviously for an anime-themed product, the editor has a number of options to create expressive eyes, allowing you to choose their shape, iris color, and luster.
That’s just the beginning, though. In total, the Nendroid Face Maker lets you mix and match parts from 16 categories, including eyelashes, eyebrows, noses, mouths, beauty marks, and scars. You can even rotate and change the position of select components.
If you need some ideas, the website also has an extensive and expanding gallery of designs that other users have created.
Alternatively, if you’re just bursting with artistic visions of your own, you’ll be happy to know that the service’s standard package lets you make two different faces for 1,480 yen (US$13).
At the moment, the Nendroid Face Maker program is, as its name implies, limited to faces. However, since Nendroid faces can be swapped between figures, this is a great way to recreate specific expressions for your favorite character that weren’t included as part of the figure’s official set, or to put your own original design into the outfit of an existing character, sort of like cosplay for figures. If either of those sound like your super-deformed dreams come true, the Nendroid Face Maker website can be found right here.
