The Nintendo character with the endless appetite is offering a full range of adorable edibles and exclusive merch.
Considering that Nintendo already has Mario in its stable of characters, one might wonder why the company needs a second platformer star with Kirby. But the adorably amorphous Kirby has his own distinct play mechanics based on his ability to absorb enemies into his body and acquire their powers.
Later this month, though, Kirby is going to be all about filling other people’s bellies instead, with the opening of a new Kirby Cafe in Tokyo, located in the Solamachi entertainment complex at the foot of the Skytree.
Starting things off is the Kirby Burger and Pasta with Meat Sauce and Seasonal Vegetables (2,580 yen [US$24]), which also includes a cup of soup, steak fries, and star-shaped tater tots. You also get to take the decorative plate home with you, so that chef cap Kirby and aproned Waddle Dee will be waiting for you at the bottom of future meals too.
If you’re not quite that hungry, or perhaps already satisfied with the plates you currently have in your kitchen, there’s the Waddle Dee Napping Rice Omelet (1,680 yen), which is perhaps the coziest-looking version of the popular Japanese comfort food that we’ve ever seen.
Of course, you can’t expect Kirby to completely resist his instinct to suck up everything in sight, so you’ll have to give him a pass for trying to steal some of your caprese (1,380 yen), should you order the side dish.
Chef Kawasaki’s Capricious Break Bowl Stew (1,480 yen) bears the globular gourmand’s seal of approval.
While everything on the menu looks cute, none of them say “Kirby Cafe!” quite so clearly as the Kirby Fluffy Strawberry Mousse (1,480 yen).
And if you’re looking to splurge at the end of the meal, or you’re just the indecisive type, the Whispy Woods Sweets Plate (2,580 yen) gives you an entire edible Kirby game setting recreated with a half-dozen different dessert types, and also a small ceramic figure of either Kirby or Waddle Dee to keep.
As is decreed by the unspoken law of Japanese themed cafes, each drink you order gets you one of six special coasters with original artwork. If you want the drink itself to be special too, there’s the Kirby Floating Marshmallow au Lait (1,180 yen), served hot or cold and with your choice of either Kirby’s face or butt floating on top (assuming one type isn’t dramatically more popular than the other and the cafe runs out).
Or if you’re looking to drink something even more unique, there’s the Kracko Fluffy Soda with Finishing Blow (880 yen), with fluffy cotton candy drenched in syrup representing the game’s recurring cyclopic thundercloud.
While saving room for dessert is always a smart idea, at the Kirby Cafe you’ll also want to leave a little space in your budget, since the cafe will also have a merchandise corner selling exclusive items such as Kirby Cafe plushies and cutlery.
The Kirby Cafe starts serving meals on September 27, and will remain open until February 17. Reservations can be made online here.
