“Today, I Feel Like a Pig” is our favourite new yakiniku joint in Tokyo right now.
Anyone who loves meat loves an all-you-can-eat yakiniku Japanese BBQ deal, and we’ve found one of the best in Tokyo right now, at a place in Shinjuku called “Kyou, Buta no Kibun nan desu“.
This wordy name cheekily translates to “Today, I Feel Like a Pig“, and if that’s how you’re feeling, this place will definitely put a smile on your face, as you’ll be able to feast on as much meat as you like for just 980 yen (US$9.15) plus tax.
▼ “Today, I Feel Like a Pig” opened near Shinjuku Gyoen on 27 September.
As the name suggests, this grill-your-own-meat Japanese BBQ restaurant specialises in pork, although at night, beef yakiniku is also available. The 980-yen all-you-can-eat deal is a thoroughly pork affair, available only at lunch and lasting for 45 minutes, with six different styles of meat to choose from.
The A option contains Fatty Pork Neck in Sauce and Pork Kalbi (short ribs) in Miso Sauce, the B option contains Fatty Pork Neck in Salt Sauce and Pork Kalbi in Miso Sauce, while the C option contains Heart and Liver in Salt Sauce.
Diners first choose one of the three options, and then after you’ve finished the first dish, you’re able to order A, B, or C as you like, so you can enjoy all the different types of pork available.
▼ At the start of the feast, diners are given a “starter kit” containing cabbage, lunch soup, rice, and dipping sauce, which comes free with the deal.
We ordered the B dish first, and followed up with A and then C. However, this was a complete mistake, and we recommend starting with C if you’re going to try all three sets. The reason for this is because the B dish contains meat covered in miso sauce, and this sauce instantly sticks to the grill, creating burnt bits that muddy the flavours of the other meats that follow. So it’s best to start with the meats in the salted sauce, followed by the regular sauce and then finish off with the miso sauce morsels at the end.
While we were yet to know better, our B pair arrived and we began the feast by placing the tasty neck and ribs on the grill.
▼ The sound of the sizzling meat was like music to our ears.
We dipped the meat pieces into our sauce and paired them with some rice, and were immediately satisfied. All the meat was hot, juicy, fatty and tasty — everything a good yakiniku should be.
▼ Then it was time to try the A dish, Fatty Pork Neck in Sauce and Pork Kalbi in Miso Sauce.
These were just as juicy and tasty as the first set, and at this point we were thankful for the free rice refills as we were devouring our meal fast.
▼ Then we moved on to the heart and liver portion of the feast.
These were fresh and had a great texture, along with a stronger grilled flavour that made them really delicious.
We kept eating and eating until our piggy bellies were full of pork, and after the meal we were already looking forward to our next lunch here again. All this meat for less than 10 bucks is definitely a great deal, and one we highly recommend trying, as long as they promise to keep pig vaginas off the menu.
