We were recently duped into thinking some high-quality pieces of Sailor Moon fan art were from the upcoming new installment in the anime franchise. In light of this, we’ve decided to be more skeptical about news concerning the lunar-themed heroine.
From now on, we’re not believing anything until we’re holding the real deal in our own two hands! Which is just what we did with a set of adult-size Sailor Moon bibs.
A few days ago, we paid a visit to the flagship Shinjuku branch of department store Isetan, which for a limited time will be offering a selection of unique Sailor Moon merchandise produced by apparel manufacturer Keisuke Kanda.
Shoppers can purchase bags decorated with Sailor Moon’s likeness, as well as socks styled after her knee-high crimson boots. We stopped by to pick up a couple of Sailor Moon-themed adult-size paper bibs, similar to what you’d use when eating lobster at a swanky seafood restaurant. Paper bibs are also commonly given to diners at Korean barbeque restaurants in Japan, so they can grill the meat at their table without splattering their work clothes with grease.
Five designs of Sailor Moon bibs are available, one for each of the series’ original heroines, or Sailor Scouts. Picking up the Sailor Moon version was a no-brainer, and we selected another modeled after Japanese fan-favorite Sailor Mercury.

Aside from their cute designs, there really isn’t anything that sets these apart from regular bibs, so the transformation process is as simple as tying the cord behind your neck. They are undeniably cute, and we’re happy with our purchase, even thoug we haven’t had the opportunity to use them yet since we’re still trying to assemble a group of our carnivorous anime-loving friends for a Korean barbeque run.
One word of caution though. Being made out of paper, the bibs are, of course, not washable. They’re strictly single-use, so if you want to dress up as Sailor Moon at the dinner table multiple times, you might want to stock up before Isetan stops selling them on September 24. Just make sure you hit the ATM first, since the Sailor Moon bibs command a price of 1,575 yen (US $15.75) each.
Expensive way to keep your clothes clean, or bargain-priced Halloween costume? You decide.
