If you’re thinking that one “would have to be out of their ever-lovin’ mind to mix sushi and soft serve ice cream,” then you’re not alone; that’s exactly what our reporter Nakano thought when he spotted an item called “Soft Susheam” on the menu of an Iwasaka sushi train restaurant in Okayama City. And yet, like a moth to a flame, he found himself unable to resist its lure.
Could something which sounded like a cross between soft-serve ice cream and sushi – two foods which, when served alone, have always been true crowd-pleasers – really work? Nakano simply had to find out.
Nakano timidly placed his order for “S-soft Susheam…” and waited, his heart pounding at what would come. Sure enough, when his waitress returned, Nakano was presented with a dish unlike anything he had ever seen before.
Somewhat to his relief, it turns out that Soft Susheam is a scoop of vinegared rice with tuna, corn, and crab sticks mixed in, all severed in an ice cream cone like you might buy at a rest stop on the highway. On top, lashings of mayonnaise were drizzled to complete the soft-serve ice cream appearance.
Giving the sushi cone a big old lick didn’t seem like it would yield much more than a mouthful of mayonnaise, so Nakano skimmed a chunk off the top with some chopsticks. Wincing as he took a nervous first bite, our reporter was pleasantly surprised at how good Soft Susheam tasted.
It was kind of like the American style sushi that he had before in Okinawa; it was very bold and flavorful. Nakano thought that combined with the ice cream shape of it would definitely appeal to kids.
Aside from the Soft Susheam, Iwasaka looked like it had a stellar line-up of regular items on its menu as well. Nakano certainly wouldn’t hesitate to return someday and try them. Still, he was content with his sushi soft-serve. It served as a pleasant memory of his visit to Okayama.
