The classic Japanese school backpack hits the street with unusual materials and cutting-edge designs.
Ever since Zooey Deschanel was spotted with a Japanese randoseru school backpack slung over her shoulder back in 2014, the humble school bag, usually worn by elementary school children in Japan, has become a hot fashion item for adults wanting to stand out with a unique yet functional accessory. Japanese brand Japaran is leading the pack when it comes to unusual satchel designs, using materials like denim, leather, and colourful stones and plastic ornaments to re-invent the school item, with a range that’s guaranteed to turn heads wherever you go.
The collection aims to be environmentally friendly by using top quality pre-used randoseru and recycled items and fabrics, making these all one-off unique designs. By adding details like studs and leather fringing, these bags have certainly grown up.

▼ If you’re after something a little cuter, there are styles with denim covers and bows…
▼ And some designs with creative camouflage patterns too.
▼ If you prefer some crazy cute Harajuku-style cuteness, this dolly bag fits the ticket, but it will set you back a cool 75,000 yen ( US$711).
▼ The “Japaran Oriental” also retails for 75,000 yen.
▼ And for something with a little more Japanese flair, traditional obi kimono sash fabrics sourced from Kyoto are used in some of their designs.
In addition to their popular randoseru backpacks, Japaran also makes some eye-catching handbags and clutches too.
To check out the full collection, be sure to visit the Japaran website, which includes options for international shipping on all of their gorgeous items.
