We’ve seen some strange pizza toppings in the past. From Kit Kats to squid ink, Japan certainly knows how to deliver when it comes to thinking outside of the box.
Now, there are two new awesome pizzas on the menu: Ramen Noodle and Natto Okonomiyaki. And that’s not all – both items are being offered as part of a collaboration using local ingredients that hark back to the 1960s. Available from Aoki’s Pizza from September 10, this is an opportunity that’s not to be missed!
The unusual pies are officially called “Gold Pizza with Okonomiyaki” and “Kirin Ramen Pizza.” The Gold Pizza takes its name from the use of Mizkan’s Gold Grain brand of natto, which sits as the star of the show atop a mound of okonomiyaki. Aoki’s Pizza, which is based in Nagoya, claims that by grilling the natto, it reduces the stickiness and creates a great flavour pairing with the mozzarella cheese.
▼ Small 1,400 yen (US$11.64), medium 2,200 yen, large 3,400 yen. All pizzas come with one, two, or three 350-milliliter (11.8-ounce) cans of Coca-Cola, depending on the size ordered.
The ramen pizza is made with a special type of noodle called “Kirin Ramen.” Created in 1965, this brand of instant noodles with cute retro packaging featuring a kirin, or giraffe, is a nostalgic Nagoya favorite. Here, the boiled noodles are served up with bacon, prawns and mozzarella cheese. To top it off, customers will receive a soy sauce powdered soup packet to add to the pizza as they please.

We might just have to make a quick trip down to Nagoya to meet these delights in person. Would you be game to try the gold pizza? Or would you ask to hold the natto? Let us know in the comments section below!
