Joining the amazing anime café openings this month is Café Barbapapa in Saitama Prefecture, with a gorgeous lineup of sweets, sandwiches and drinks all featuring cute character details from the series.
Café Barbapapa opened its doors on November 13 at the Aeon Lake Town shopping mall in Koshigaya, Saitama Prefecture, with an original menu, exclusive merchandise and even a take-out corner. The opening marks 45 years since the cute pink-coloured “papa” first appeared in a children’s picture book in France, before spreading joy around the world with his cast of family and friends in print and on television.
Now the colourful troupe is bringing some edible joy to their Japanese fans, who get to consume all the cuteness with adorable meals, sweets, and drinks created for their 45th birthday.
▼ Pancakes with whipped cream come to life with the title character’s gorgeous smiley face and a pink Barbapapa chocolate for 1,080 yen (US$8.81).
▼ Both the main character and the title of the series take their name from “barbe-à-papa” (daddy’s beard), which is French for cotton candy. It’s fitting that one of the signature sweets on the menu is the Cotton Candy Eclair set for 1,280 yen.
▼ Lattes appear with the smiling face of either Barbapapa or Barbamama for 580 yen each.
▼ There are also some light meal options, including a vegan burger, curry gratin, vegetable pasta, and the cutely-wrapped avocado sandwich below for 1,080 yen.
▼ Available for take-out, for 1,900 yen each, is a roll cake featuring some of the colourful characters from the series and a six-piece macaron set dedicated to Barbamama and Barbapapa’s romance.
And once you’ve filled your belly with cuteness, you can check out more sweet merchandise in the product section of the store. They’ve got tableware, cushions, mini humidifiers and even adorable computer accessories.
▼ Keyboards are available for 10,800 yen each and you can pick up a mouse for 3,888 yen.
Sadly, American-born Talus Taylor, who created the series with his French wife, Annette Tison, passed away earlier this year. Despite his sad passing, his cute, smiling characters continue to live on, bringing joy to children and adults around the world.
Happy birthday Barbapapa! We’ll come and visit you soon and hold up a hot mug of latte in your honour. Santé!
