The new McFlurry comes filled with traditional Japanese flavours.
Back in 2013, McDonald’s Japan released the Matcha Oreo McFlurry, which blended rich vanilla ice cream with powdered green tea and crunchy chocolate biscuit pieces. The mix was so popular it returned for an encore season in 2014, and while it was missing from menus last year, the Matcha McFlurry has finally returned with a whole new look, featuring more traditional Japanese flavours.
▼ The “Uji Matcha Adzuki McFlurry” (280 yen/US$2.51) says goodbye to the Oreo cookie element and swaps it for a more traditional green tea partner: adzuki red beans.
The dessert is part of a new lineup from McDonald’s Japan called “By McSweets”, which aims to produce limited-edition menu items using regional ingredients. The new McFlurry uses a rich powdered green tea sauce made using matcha from Uji, highly regarded as the country’s premier tea-growing region, along with adzuki red beans sourced from Hokkaido.
Joining the McFlurry will be another dessert called the “Hokkaido Milk Pie” (120 yen), which has a creamy centre encased in flaky pastry. The highlight here is the cream filling, which incorporates one of the northernmost island’s best-known specialties: fresh milk.
On sale at McDonald’s locations around the country from 29 March, the Hokkaido Milk Pie will be available until late April, while the matcha-flavoured McFlurry will be around until mid-May. As a special treat to celebrate the new Hokkaido Shinkansen service, which begins running on 26 March, the McDonald’s at JR Tokyo Station and at 10 locations in Hokkaido will be selling the two products ahead of the official sale date, from 25-28 March. During this period, 200 Milk Pies a day will be served in limited-edition purple packaging, instead of their designated red packaging, to match the purple design accents on the new bullet train service.
And last but not least, the first 100 customers who show a photo of, or ticket for, the new Hokkaido Shinkansen at the JR Tokyo Station McDonald’s from 10:30 a.m. on 26 March, will receive a Hokkaido Milk Pie absolutely free.
