Eight unforgettable Studio Ghibli films are part of the extra-charming collection.
It’s hard to think of a more welcome anime presence than the collected cast of the films of Studio Ghibli. Sure, they may not have the same level of flash or trendy stylishness as the stars of whatever late-night TV series is the hit of the current anime season, but Ghibli’s character, creature, and costume design has a timelessly evocative quality that always brings a smile to fans’ faces, no matter where they pop up.
And the next place they’re set to pop up is on your fridge, or any other magnet-friendly surface in your home or workspace. Ghibli specialty store Donguri Kyowakoku has just released a new series of magnets featuring the charming characters of My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service Castle in the Sky Laputa, Porco Rosso, and Whisper of the Heart.
Starting things off is studio mascot Totoro, represented with two versions of the large-size forest spirit, one with his back turned (but who could mistake that silhouette and umbrella?) and one playing an ocarina. Also present and mid and small-size Totoros.
Also hailing from Totoro is a friendly cluster of soot spirits, while Kiki’s Delivery Service gives us two magnets for black cat Jiji (one with his “pretending to be a stuffed animal” pose) and one of his much less talkative girlfriend Lily.
Spirited Away’s Boh mouse and Yubaba’s bird share a quiet nap, while the more serious side of Ghibli’s fantasy adventures can be seen in San’s mask andthe Great Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke plus the magical pendant from Castle in the Sky.
▼ Hopefully you won’t suffer the dame fate as the last person who tried to make off with the Great Forest Spirit’s head.
And last, a team of scene stealers with Castle in the Sky’s fox squirrel, the boss of Porco Rosso’s air pirates, Whisper of the Heart’s Luisa, and Howl’s Moving Castle’s Turnip Head.
▼ We suppose you could also pretend the fox squirrel is Teto from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind if you wanted to.
The ocarina Totoro, half-turned Jiji, and fox squirrel go on sale in early April, but the rest of the collection is available right now. Each magnet is priced at 770 yen (US$7.45) and can be ordered through Donguri Kyowakoku’s “Up in the Sky branch,” as it calls it’s online shop, here.
