Joan Coello

Native to the sweltering lands of Singapore, Joan spent a substantial amount of her teenage years gnawing through translated versions of Japanese manga and dubbed anime. Picking up the language sparked off something in her to abandon years of education and experience in design to pursue a career in translation instead. After spending a couple of years localizing Japanese product packaging and mobile games for the English-speaking population, Joan gave in to her longing for the magical land of Japan and leapt into the arms of Tokyo (missing by a bit and landing in Kanagawa prefecture). In her free time, she continues to nibble on Japanese manga and anime, now savoring them in full authentic flavor.

The mysterious ways of Japanese mums that never fail to mess with our heads and funny bones

Mothers. They’re the amazing beings who carried us in their tummies and brought us into this world. Some of us live with one, some of us can’t wait to move away from one. Some mums are fashionable and love parties, some can’t send a text message without messing up a few words every time, some tend to nag too much, and some bake the best cookies in the world.

The bottom line is, every mum is unique in her own way, and they’re lovable for all their strengths and flaws…especially when they have their own hilarious methods of doing things, like the mums of these Japanese Twitter users!

What if Cinderella was filmed in China? Chinese Weibo user works his Photoshop magic

Even if you’re familiar with the story of Disney’s Cinderella, you might not know that the name of the heroine is actually Ella, and the name Cinderella was given to her by her obnoxious step-sisters, who poked fun at how Ella was always covered in cinder.

Ironically, when we think of Cinderella, what first comes to mind is usually the image of a beautiful girl in a gorgeous blue dress and glass slippers, not the one of a dirty, dusty peasant girl. If the filmmakers of the live-action movie had filmed on location in some parts of China, perhaps we would have gotten to see a really dusty version of Cinderella, just like what this Weibo user has depicted!

Japan’s poop lovers take pooping to the next level with “painful” toilets

We don’t spend much of our day on the toilet, but the overall cleanliness or ambience of the restroom makes those couple of minutes either pure bliss or complete torture. If you had a choice, obviously you would prefer to take a dump in a nice, cleanly environment, wouldn’t you?

To create the most conducive environment for one of life’s most important businesses, some decorate their restrooms with flowers, and some even leave a mini library of books and magazines in there. The Japan Unko Society, however, has a “painful” toilet fully decorated with anime-style characters!

Smoking may be bad, but these tobacco art creations are nothing short of fab!

Smoking is commonly seen as a vice, health hazard, and sometimes a dangerous weapon, and in the eyes of most non-smokers, smoking has virtually zero benefits — be it to the person smoking, the people around them, or, well, pretty much the entire universe.

However, if there was one thing related to smoking that smokers and non-smokers alike could enjoy, it would probably these tobacco art pieces made out of nothing but cigarettes!

Possibly the biggest ever marriage proposal made with Post-it notes!

Is it just me or does everyone seem to be going to great pains to propose these days? It’s almost as if nine out of ten proposals I see on my Facebook feed are done either while on an overseas vacation, or completed with the help of a dozens of people and involving some kind of coordinated event.

For the record, I’m not against huge marriage proposals. If it makes the couple happy then it’s the best way it should be done, but on a totally personal level, I think a proposal is an extremely private affair that should be kept between the couple. However, I am a sucker for creative ideas, and sometimes, some really creative proposals do make me wish that I was proposed to in such a memorable manner. Like this three-storey-tall Post-it proposal that was made possible with 250 Post-it “elves”!

Summon your inner middle-aged woman for the obashot, Japan’s latest photo trend!【Photos】

A picture is worth a thousand words. That’s perhaps why instead of writing letters or spending hours chatting on the phone, people are gravitating towards “keeping in touch” through sharing photos on social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. With these services, you’re not just keeping in touch with your friends and family, you’re keeping in touch with the latest photo trends.

If you’re one of those photo trend followers, then you have to master the art of posing like an obasan (which literally means “aunt” in Japanese but also refers to middle-aged women in general), otherwise known as the obashot (short for obasan shot), because that’s what’s trending among Japanese Twitter users now. And also because it’s funny.

However, in the eyes of some people, high school girls’ uniforms are seen as sexy outfits. There has even been discussion on some Japanese forums as some netizens claim that Korean high school girl uniforms are “more erotic” than the uniforms typically seen in Japan.

Chinese cosplayer’s version of Kongou is pregnant for real, but fans can’t decide if they like it

Some video game and anime fans are happy and satisfied with having just a 2-D waifu to satisfy their romantic fantasies. After all, a waifu would never lament that your salary is too low, or snoop around your messages and emails checking for traces of cheating, and she would always look as hot as when you first met her. Sounds perfect, but then, who is going to inherit yours and your sweet waifu’s genes of awesomeness?

A Chinese cosplay photographer has the best of both dimensions with his waifu Kongou, I mean, his wife who does an adorable cosplay of Kongou, and they have recently been in the spotlight on Weibo due to her pregnant Kongou cosplay shots.

e.l.f. Cosmetics delights Frozen fans with an Elsa makeover in a book

I subscribe to a handful of beauty gurus on YouTube, and the moment Frozen turned out to be such a mega hit, I knew I had to brace myself for a rush of Elsa-inspired makeovers taking over my subscription list. True enough, the Elsa-themed tutorial videos came in like a wrecking ball and suddenly my YouTube feed was flooded with women sporting blonde braids and smokey purple eyelids.

The thing about these makeup tutorials is that many of these YouTube beauty gurus have a rather extensive collection of makeup palettes and tools, so they can easily create different looks, but the average person might not own products in all the colors required to replicate Elsa’s look. That, was until e.l.f. launched their Disney Elsa makeup series that provided the full package at affordable prices. Check out the lineup after the break!

15-year-old Chinese “plastic” girl gets bashed on Weibo, lashes back with attitude and selfies

You know how people always say things like “looks are not important”, or “money isn’t everything”? It’s something we’d like to agree with, but isn’t it ironic how some people gain overnight fame and roll in riches just because of their appearances?

Case in point, a 15-year-old girl in China recently hit the headlines on various Asian news websites because of the looks she acquired through plastic surgery. She doesn’t brand herself as a “living Barbie”, but by the looks of it, she has probably earned herself membership into the Real Barbie Army.
