Japan’s Twitter users weigh in on the question: “Whose pet looks cutest on the scales?”

A weight-check is a routine part of many vet examinations, themselves something that can be traumatic enough for the average pooch or kitty without the added pressure of finding out they’ve put on a few extra grams. But it turns out that plopping your pet down on the scales is actually the perfect opportunity for an adorable photo op, as these Twitter users found recently. Let’s check out some pets at the vet’s!

How relaxed are you right now, on a scale from one to Akimbo Kitty?

Oh, to be a cat, and inhabit one of those fluffy, soft, ultra-bendy bodies. It’s well-known that cats are so flexible as to be basically a liquid with fur, and what this means is that they’ve got an uncanny knack of being able to relax comfortably in the most awkward of positions. Take Akimbo Kitty, the cat from these snaps, who couldn’t be happier to be sunken into that beanbag/chair thing. Just look at those jaunty toes!

Itami-kawaii: Cute gets depressing, inspires Japanese Twitter users

Perhaps one of the first words Japanese language-learners pick up is “kawaii,” which makes sense considering how often you’ll hear it in everything from TV shows and anime to a stroll down Takeshita-dōri. However, “kawaii” isn’t just “kawaii” anymore–there’s also kimo-kawaii (“gross but cute”), among others.

And now there’s a new kawaii that’s spreading through the Japanese Twitterverse: Itami-kawaii, or “painful but cute.” It might be hard to visualize, so check out some pictures below and get ready to groan “kawaiiiiiii” in agony.

Lotte’s animated gum hotties are back with new post-Valentine’s-Day-short!

A little while back, we introduced you to a novel promotional concept backed by major candy manufacturer Lotte featuring cool guys based around different flavours of gum. The animated hotties appeared in a short “visual-novel” style animated commercial where they romanced the main character (a tooth) with their minty fresh appeal. Well, we’re happy to report that, post-Valentine’s-Day-chocolate-binge, they’re back with a new animated feature, but all is not right in gum land – too much chocolate seems to have made the guys go a little funny in the head!

It’s Panda-monium! Play-fighting pandas pummel and paw their way into our hearts

Pandas have a pretty laid-back and serene image, don’t they? When you picture pandas, you probably imagine them lazing around, maybe chewing on some bamboo or their own feet.

But it turns out that when you put a bunch of pandas into a zoo enclosure together, you sometimes wind up with a panda death match, a veritable battle royale of pandas, where escape is futile and the fight goes on until only one panda emerges victorious! Okay, so they’re only play-fighting, but it’s still really, really cute!

Purritos hit Japan! Twitter users can’t stop wrapping their cats and it’s too cute!

Cats are notorious for being finicky and difficult sometimes (okay, actually quite a lot of the time). As  cat lovers we learn to cherish every head-butt and hand-nuzzle that our feline buddies dole out as and when the mood strikes them, but sometimes you’ve got to take matters into your own hands if you want to get some loving. If kitty’s resisting your advances, try gently wrapping them up in a big old “purrito” with an old towel or blanket, then you’ll have a captive audience for your snuggles and smooches!

Trust us, cats love it, and if you don’t believe us, check out this purrito gallery!

Netizens hatch adorable baby birds from supermarket eggs, provide evidence

Uzura (quail eggs) are a popular food in Japan, as their relatively tiny size makes them perfect for snacking or adding to bento. As a result, you can find them in pretty much any supermarket over here. But it turns out that some shoppers out there aren’t interested in eating the little speckled eggs – they’ve been trying to hatch them instead! When reports first started popping up from netizens claiming to have hatched their own quails, we thought this was just an urban legend, but now a YouTube clip and blog post has appeared, showing different people seemingly hatching actual, live baby quails from supermarket eggs. Join us for some adorable pics and videos!

Of course, things aren’t perfect, and stray and abandoned cats are a sad reality in Japan as much as they are in many other countries. But today we’re here to appreciate the happy cats of Gotanjo temple in Fukui Prefecture, who are lovingly tended to by Buddhist monks and fawned over by the adoring tourists who come to visit.
